T-Mobile and Starlink: Connecting the Unreachable with New Satellite Technology
![]() |
In a dramatic Super Bowl commercial, T-Mobile, a long-time participant in the event, unveiled its partnership with Elon Musk’s Starlink to bring mobile connectivity to underserved areas across the United States. This collaboration marks a groundbreaking move, powered by Starlink’s expanding satellite network, which has already reshaped the way people access communication globally.
While this partnership holds great potential, there are still concerns surrounding regulations and the long-term implications for Starlink. With the service set to launch later this year, here’s everything you need to know about the Starlink-T-Mobile collaboration, how to sign up, and when it will be available.
Was Elon Musk Part of the T-Mobile Super Bowl Commercial?
Although Starlink played a key role in T-Mobile’s commercial, Elon Musk himself did not make a direct appearance. Nonetheless, this moment was significant, as it marked the first time one of Musk’s companies had featured prominently in a Super Bowl ad.
While Musk didn’t comment directly on the commercial, he shared it on his social media accounts and reposted positive feedback after it aired.
When Will the Starlink-T-Mobile Service Be Available?
T-Mobile has announced that the service is currently available as a free beta version, allowing users from all networks to try it out. Once the service fully launches in July, it will cost $20 per month per line.
How Will the Starlink-T-Mobile Service Work?
Much like Starlink’s existing internet service, this new offering will use satellites to connect directly to users’ mobile phones, providing connectivity even in remote areas. The commercial highlighted the partnership as “the only space-based network that automatically connects to the phone you already own.” As a result, the service will be available in over 500,000 square miles that were previously out of reach.
What is Starlink?
Starlink is a division of SpaceX, providing internet connectivity through a satellite-based system. The service is designed to offer reliable and flexible internet access in locations where traditional broadband services are unavailable. Musk has stated that setting up Starlink is a simple two-step process, aimed at providing high-quality service to users in both urban and rural areas.
Starlink’s service is available in three main categories: residential, mobile for land use (roaming), and for use on boats. Prices start at $120 per month, with an additional one-time hardware cost of $599.
U.S. Government’s Past Attempts to Regulate Starlink
In 2024, California Congressman Robert Garcia and other lawmakers launched an investigation into SpaceX to determine whether Starlink technology was being used by Russia. Elon Musk responded publicly, denying that any Starlink terminals had been sold to Russia, either directly or indirectly.
As of now, the investigation is ongoing, though SpaceX has cooperated with the authorities. Reports also revealed that the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) was conducting a probe into its relationship with Starlink, although this investigation has since been halted.
This situation raises concerns about Musk’s growing influence and potential conflicts of interest, especially considering that SpaceX has also been under scrutiny for environmental issues in Texas.
